The CNR (Case Number Record) is a unique 16-character code assigned to every case filed in Indian district and high courts. Unlike a case number (which repeats across years and courts), the CNR is permanent and unique.
What it looks like
A CNR looks like MHHC010012342012 — four letters (the court establishment code) followed by twelve digits.
Why it matters
With the CNR you can track a case across its entire life, even if it moves between courts or stages. It is the most reliable way to look up case status on eCourts.
How to find yours
- It is printed on most case papers and orders.
- Your advocate can tell you.
- You can search the eCourts portal by party name or case number to retrieve it.
Use it on KanoonHQ
Enter your CNR to track the case and get hearing reminders. Don't have it? You can also search by court, case type, number and year.
