IPC to BNS: how the new criminal law sections map

4 min read · Updated 14 June 2026

On 1 July 2024, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC). Many familiar IPC sections now have new numbers under the BNS.

Why this matters

If you are reading an older notice, FIR, or judgment, it may cite IPC sections. To understand the current law, you need the corresponding BNS provision.

A few common changes

  • Murder — IPC 302 → BNS 103
  • Cheating — IPC 420 → BNS 318
  • Theft — IPC 378/379 → BNS 303

Some sections were merged, split, or modified — not every mapping is one-to-one.

Look up any mapping

KanoonHQ's legal library has the full IPC↔BNS mapping across all 36,894 sections, with the original text in plain language. Search any section to see its current equivalent.
